THIS IS LIKE THAT A man walks into a lecture room and says to the class… no wait, sorry. So there’s a lecture hall, a slide projector, and an apple… there’s supposed to be a man? Oh right, the man walks in. So a man walks into a lecture room—no wait, there’s no apple. What I mean is he wants to tell the world about the beauty he finds in language, only he can’t find the words for it. A show for anyone who has ever felt misunderstood, or felt they might feel understood but weren’t. This is Like That is a one-person play that grapples with questions about language, identity, religion, and the stories we tell others and ourselves. Also, there’s definitely an apple.

MICHAEL SEAN CIRELLI (Playwright) is a writer and actor based in New York City. He has performed with and wrote sketches for Literally Everyone. His plays include The Rogue King (Crashbox Living Room series), Grit (Crashbox Read.Play.Write.), and This Is Like That. He is excited to continue exploring this piece with his longtime collaborators, Emerie and Mae, and the support of AFO and Jordan. Michael is a graduate of DeSales University with a BA in Theater and has also attended the Atlantic Theater Company’s conservatory training program. www.michaelseancirelli.com

EMERIE SNYDER (Director) is a NYC-based theatre director and creator of new work. She collaborates closely with playwrights and other artists to create theatre experiences, and often draws upon her art history background to explore relationships between visual art and theatre. She also specializes in directing solo performance. She has developed new work with contemporary playwrights including Anton Dudley, Gwydion Suilebhan, Davy Rothbart, Mfoniso Udofia and Lally Katz. Current projects in development include EXHIBIT, an immersive gallery tour play (developed in residency through New Georges, premiered at 3LD in June 2017), TRANSMISSION, a participatory performance sermon by Gwydion Suilebhan (workshop produced by All For One Theater in Dec. 2017), and THIS IS LIKE THAT, a slide lecture play by Michael Sean Cirelli. World premiere productions include ARCHIPELAGO, an evening of short one-person plays (both newly commissioned and existing); NEVERCRACKED, which paired Daniel MacIvor’s play Never Swim Alone with Gwydion Suilebhan’s Cracked (commissioned for the production); and BODIES OF WATER by Erin Breznitsky.  Emerie also wrote/directed WALLS, a short film, and A VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD, an audio-theatrical experience for one listener (part of Satellite Collective’s international art experiment TELEPHONE), and co-created UMBRELLA HOUSES, a play with live video elements. Emerie is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and a New Georges Affiliated Artist. www.emeriesnyder.net
