AFO stands with our Black artists, staff and audience in demanding justice, transparency and reform.
White Supremacy and systemic racism have infiltrated every aspect of American life, and that includes our own industry. We understand that AFO is not immune to this racism and we strive to listen, learn, and grow as an organization.
We believe that Black Lives Matter and that raising your voice in protest, whether singularly or as a community, is the only way to enact change.
AFO Advocates
AFO Staff is donating to
these organizations that support the
Black Lives Matter movement.
Southern Poverty Law Center
"The SPLC has been fighting for racial justice for almost 50 years by monitoring hate groups and taking them to court, defending voting rights and working to transform the criminal justice system and current models of incarceration."
-Michael Wolk, Artistic Director
The Leadership Conference Education Fund
"The Leadership Conference Education Fund is the nations oldest and largest civil and human rights coalition, comprised of over 200 organizations. It builds public education campaigns in the areas of voting rights, justice reform and policing. "
-Michael Wolk, Artistic Director
American Civil Liberties Union
"The ACLU works through the courts, congress and local communities to insure all citizens are given their rights under the constitution -- whether it's the right to bail, to an attorney, or to vote."
-Michael Wolk, Artistic Director
Color of Change
"Color of Change is a Black-led racial justice organization that is truly doing the work. From ending cash bail to fighting for justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and all the Black folx who have lost their lives to police brutality and systemic injustice. They are also fighting to root out and dismantle white nationalism in right wing politics. I especially like the "Kick Trump Off Twitter" Campaign!"
-Nicholas Cotz, Executive & Producing Director
Showing Up For Racial Justice
"For our 10 year anniversary, my wife and I attended a SURJ town hall on actions that white allies can take to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Afterward, we both felt motivated and ready to jump in the deep-end. We have phone banked in Georgia and have started organizing for change on a local level in our hometown."
-Nicholas Cotz, Executive & Producing Director
Immigrant Families Together
"Since the separation of children from their parents began at the border, we have been supporting this organization. Started by some of our most treasured theater artists, this organization makes real change by gathering bail for imprisoned parents, helping to reconnect families - sometimes across the entire country, and even gathering clothes and school supplies for families once they are reunited and awaiting hearings. When the COVID pandemic hit we knew that these families would be doubly suffering and at a much higher risk; and we knew that IFT would be there to support them."

Black Trans Femmes in the Arts: Protesters Emergency Fund
"The mission of the BTFA Collective is to connect the community of black trans women and non-binary femmes in the arts and to build power among themselves. In partnership with Black Trans Travel Fund, For the Gworls, and the Okra Project, they are raising funds to support Black trans protestors with resources, medical care, and bail.
Trans Black Lives Matter."

Equal Justice Initiative
"The EJI has been working for 31 years to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States. They provide legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. EJI 's work is critical in changing how marginalized communities are disproportionally represented in our prison system."
-Giverny Petitmermet, Audience Development & Marketing Associate
Voter Protection Project
"Voting is a way that the people can make their voice heard and is our constitutional right. As see recently in Georgia, that right is being infringed upon. Voter Protection Project is committed to ending partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression by electing candidates at the state and federal levels that are forceful advocates for voting rights. Their work feels especially critical in an election year."
-Giverny Petitmermet, Audience Development & Marketing Associate
LGBTQ+ Freedom Fund
"They are a Black-led organization that helps LGBTQ+ people in jail or immigrant detention post bail. They also raise awareness about LGBTQ+ over-incarceration in the US."
-Josh Adam Ramos, Development Manager & Associate Producer
The Okra Project
"This Black-led collective addresses the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home-cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans folks."
-Josh Adam Ramos, Development Manager & Associate Producer
National Black Justice Coalition
"NBJC is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving people, including people living with HIV/AIDS."
-Josh Adam Ramos, Development Manager & Associate Producer
All For One asserts that Black Lives Matter. We are committed to supporting and amplifying Black voices and perspectives through our conduct and our programming. All For One acknowledges it is currently a white-led organization operating in an industry plagued with systemic racism. We pledge to hold ourselves accountable, to examine our inevitable mistakes and missteps, and to make amends when we have wronged our colleagues or our community. Moving forward:
-
We pledge that each season's Solo Collective will always include the voices of Black Artists and other Artists of Color.
-
We pledge that our cohort of Artists in Residence will continue to include and hold space for Black Artists and Artists of Color.
-
We pledge that creative teams for Main Stage productions will always include multiple BIPOC Artists.
-
We pledge to always pay our artists and never ask for work for free.
-
Leadership and staff will be pursuing anti-racist training to combat the privilege and biases that have shaped us, in order to better understand our complicity in the racial inequities of our industry and our society.
