AFO Mentor Project
AFO MENTOR PROJECT
The AFO Mentor Project with Nilaja Sun offers students in New York City an intensive journey into the world of solo performance. By providing workshops and the opportunity to witness and discuss exceptional solo performance, the AFO Mentor Project will give students the tools and support to create a solo masterpiece of their very own.
Six high school students, ages 15-18, were selected in the summer of 2012 from six NYC arts in education programs: Epic Theatre Ensemble, MCC Theater, Brooklyn Performing Arts Intensive, The Drama Program at Law, DreamYard Project, and vibe Theater Experience.
During the All For One Theater Festival, September 14 – 30, 2012 at the Cherry Lane Theatre, these young thespians took their first solo performance workshop taught by Nilaja Sun, as well as attended 3 solo shows accompanied by Nilaja and other instructors. The performances were followed by talkbacks and a chance for students to discuss their experiences and how they were inspired with their peers and instructors.
After the AFO Festival, the students had 3 weekend workshops during the fall where Nilaja facilitated the sculpting and strengthening of their work. With the assistance of a professional director, the students then began to stage their work and prepare for the world premiere of their first solo performance. The 2012 AFO Mentor Project culminated in the Mentor Project Showcase on December 1, 2012.

In the second year, six students will create and expand up to 30 minutes of solo material that again will be refined and polished for presentation at the culminating 2013 AFO Mentor Project Student Showcase. Following the showcase, the students will participate in an Industry Day with a panel of experts in the field who will advise them about the world of solo performance.
