This is the story of Lakshmi, a 13-year-old girl from Nepal, who is sold by her family to a brothel in India. The play spans one year as Lakshmi struggles to survive this new life, while holding onto seemingly impossible hope for a better one.
The acclaimed novel Sold by Patricia McCormick, two-time National Book Award nominee, has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and been translated into 12 languages. Sold earned a National Book Award nomination for young adult fiction in 2006. A recent independent film adaptation has shown in festivals. This year Ms. McCormick was the New York Times’ best-selling Young Adult author with Never Fall Down, also a National Book Award nominee.
MICHAEL MURPHY (Adaptor) is the author of Sin: A Cardinal Deposed. The New Group production starring Tony Award winner John Cullum received an Obie Citation and Drama Desk Nomination for Best Play. His play, The Conscientious Objector starred John Cullum again in a production at the Keen Company, NYC. He is represented by CAA.
BRIAN CICHOCKI (Director) is co-founder of Hard Four Productions, along with Writer/Producer, Sean J Quinn. Credits include M.G.W., The Homecoming, One for the Road, The Crucible, Refuge, Kerry and Angie.
MAHIRA KAKKAR (Performer) is an award winning New York based actor. Film and TV credits include "Hank and Asha" (Slamdance favorite, Best actress Napa Film Festival), "Hechki", the upcoming indie film "Bite Me", "Law and Order", "Louie", "Odd Mom Out", "Blacklist", "Blue Bloods", "The Big C." Selected theater credits include Monsoon Wedding with Mira Nair, Miss Witherspoon and Vanya, Sonia.. with Christopher Durang, Clive with Ethan Hawke.
